Welcome to “Read, Look, Listen,” a bi-weekly newsletter featuring our favorite stuff from the corners of the internet delivered directly to your inbox. From emerging trends to obscure movie deep-dives, let us do the digging to find the cool stuff, so you don't have to. Ideally, this will help us all become better marketers in the process. If not, at least we’ll have better things to chat about at office happy hours.
How Supreme-Style Merch Drops Took Over Corporate America
2020 really brought out the weird in all of us. Last year’s “boredom economy” created some exciting trends in brand marketing. Of particular interest is how leaning into hypebeast culture is now a leading tactic of emerging and established brands. Writer Adam Bluestein goes in deep to explain the “peak-hype” strategies of why you’re seeing Chipotle creating makeup lines and Stouffer’s selling mac n cheese hoodies.
It will be interesting to see what the next era looks like. Our hunch at SOBOL is an empowerment of the new “creator economy.”
This is why you should listen to…
Power to the Person by Packy McCormick
Packy brings us a great article to listen to about the creator economy and how individuals are in a prime position to build substantial businesses with unique tools. Decentralized finance, or Defi, allows individuals to invest without navigating traditional banking, and blockchain-integrated tech like NFTs allows creatives to connect with their fans in ways we’ve never seen. If you’re not familiar yet, don’t worry - you will be soon. Fundamentally, as Packy puts it - “people follow people, not companies.” But now, people can build better products on a larger scale. The future is bright.
UndercoverOsh, The Anonymous Michael Jordan of Instagram Mood Boards
Everyone has their own collection of favorite Instagram accounts they follow, whether that be a celebrity, brand, or influencer. Without question, one of ours is UndercoverOsh. Remember Tumblr from back in the day? Osh is like Tumblr on steroids. A daily mood board with the absolute perfect vibe captured moments and messages that hit you right in the millennial organ if we had one. And it doesn’t stop at one account-- Osh has other branch accounts that you’ll come across like OshSports, OshThoughts, Oshsgarage, & Oshfits, to name a few. The best part of it all is that the accounts are ran anonymously by some dear soul somewhere on this earth that isn’t trying to sell us on something and has no greater mission other than helping us get through our days a little easier. We need more accounts like these, but more importantly, more people like this one.
